Trend Report 2025: Erik Sterck and TTNL look ahead to IT topics in the new year

Leonberg/Culemborg (NL), February 4, 2025 - Last autumn, the Leonberg-based system house entered into a strategic partnership with the Dutch TTNL Group. A trend report takes a look at the coming year:

  • Rise in spending on public cloud services and increased demand for managed services expected
  • AI takes key role in improving cyber security.
  • Increased use of a zero-trust model against more complex attack scenarios
  • Boundaries between cloud-native and edge computing will continue to blur
  • More sustainable operation of data centers is progressing

Public cloud services will be increasingly in demand in 2025. This will be driven by efforts to relieve the burden on IT departments and create internal capacities. Where individual solutions were previously requested, the trend is moving towards long-term business relationships across a company's entire IT landscape. These are the key findings of the trend report, in which Erik Sterck GmbH and the TTNL Group provide an outlook on the IT topics of 2025. "Customer demand has changed. At first, they mainly wanted a certain amount of storage space, but now they are increasingly asking for help with complex environments and for solutions that exactly match their needs," says Derk-Jan Boon, CTO of the TTNL Group and co-author of the trend report.

AI for automation and improved cyber security

The authors of the trend report also see increased interest in the use of generative AI in 2025. The main challenge for CIOs will be to ensure a realistic application while weighing up all the risks and opportunities. The new technology will then make a valuable contribution to the analysis, automation and monitoring of security threats.

In terms of cybersecurity, the potential of generative AI is enormous: “AI can quickly detect anomalies, identify potential threats and react in real time,” the experts state in the trend report. Another trend is so-called “embedded AI”, in which AI assistants are integrated into existing software and services to support human security engineers.

New security paradigms and focus on zero-trust models

There is a shift in threat scenarios in the area of cyber security: While attackers used to primarily target end devices, they are increasingly infiltrating a company's entire IT environment, i.e. servers, storage and back-ups. In addition, the attack scenarios are becoming increasingly complex and are sometimes supported by AI.

This situation has consequences: on the one hand, a functioning disaster recovery plan (DR plan) is becoming increasingly important. The concept behind this is to minimize the impact of a cyber attack. Derk-Jan Boon emphasizes: "We can't prevent a customer from being attacked. But we can protect them from the consequences of an attack."

On the other hand, it is to be expected that companies will increasingly switch to zero-trust security models. People-focused security measures are also becoming more important: Trained employees who can make competent and independent decisions will sustainably increase the security level of the IT infrastructure.

Cloud-native and edge computing for more flexibility

In the cloud-native landscape of 2025, serverless computing will be important alongside edge computing. The complexity of IT infrastructures has increased in recent years and will continue to grow. As a result, interest in solutions that reduce the complexity of the many components in cloud-native implementations has also grown. "More and more companies are turning to the cloud. This trend has been going on for several years now and there seems to be no end in sight for the time being. The first step into the cloud is often to move hardware and software on site to a public cloud (lift and shift). After that, companies are increasingly turning to cloud-native environments in the expectation of benefiting even more from cloud computing," says Derk-Jan Boon.

Sustainable IT: Growing pressure to go green

Growing sustainability awareness can also be seen in the IT sector. The trend report expects one sustainability measure to be the transformation of data centers. “There is a trend in the industry to replace the big energy guzzlers - and these are actually just the rotating hard disks - with flash modules,” says Derk-Jan Boon. Artificial intelligence will also contribute to greater sustainability in the company thanks to its ability to optimize processes and standardize tasks.
